This morning, I heard on a local radio show that pets (dogs, cats, snakes) were running wild around the city. It seems like the population of abandoned animals has recently just bloomed. Families that can no longer take care of their pets are apparently just letting their animals go. That includes exotic animals that don't belong here, like cougars, panthers, poisonous snakes and even an alligator. What in the world are these types of animals doing within the city limits in the first place? People live here, children play here... Don't they understand the hazards of letting these dangerous animals just run rampant through the city? Maybe the bigger question should be; how can people raise these animals then just “let them go,” possibly causing harm to their neighbors and their community? If you have ever seem what a pack of feral dogs can do to a deer, you would think twice about letting your kids outside, EVER. They don't fear humans like wild animals and they don't discriminate.

I am a pet owner, two dogs and a cat (our guinea pig passed away last March, she will not be replaced, she was one-of-a-kind and is deeply missed). An even though we have had our fair share of hard times, the thought to just let our animals run free has never crossed our minds. Our pets are a part of our family and have been for years. When they are sick, we take care of them, when they want to play, we throw the toy and they fetch (except the cat, she turns up her noise and walks away), when they die, we hold a private funeral service and share our greatest memory of the animal. They are a part of the family. Maybe that makes us different, but at least we are being different with dignity.

I should say that much of the story on the radio revolved around a recent coyote (the animal – Canis latrans) sighting in a populated area. That's a different thing all together. Invasive species, like coyotes, will always expand their range where there is opportunity. I read a story recently about global warming that stated that tropical species are expanding their range toward the poles at an alarming rate. Well, so be that. But to set your poodle, or house cat out to be coyote chow and invite them into your neighborhood by doing so, is just reprehensible. That's where the problem begins. These former pet owners fundamentally fail in three areas of responsibility. The first is to their animal; a domestic animal depends on their owners for care and in return gives loyalty and affection. Secondly; to their community. I use that term loosely, as so many of us don't even know the names of our next door neighbors. It's a civic duty to care for your animal and if you can't, to responsibly hand it over to an animal care agency. Its just plain cruel to “let them be free” when they have no experience in the “wild.” And thirdly to the world in which we live; feral animals can destroy local populations of naturally occurring animals and upset the ecology of parks, wild areas and even sub divisions. All because the pet owners chose to dump their “problems” on society instead of doing the right thing.

In the movie Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, we got a dog's eye view of what a dog goes through when they are “abandoned”. Shadow (Don Ameche), Sassy (Sally Field) and Chance (Michael J. Fox), belonged to a family that went on vacation and fearing they had been “abandoned” by their owners, they went off on a quest to find their family. This brought back painful memories for Chance as he tells his story, “I was abandoned when I was very young. I lived on the streets scrounging for food sleeping wherever I could; that seemed like fun at first, but pretty soon, it landed me behind bars. But I don't like to talk about that.” The point is, when we walk away from our pets who are one responsibility, we actually abandon a multitude of responsibilities. That's how you know when something is not right, the problems multiply. It's chaos theory, the single choice that is made, isn't just a single choice. That single choice often has far reaching consequences, beyond just one own personal life.

I wrote about this today because it made me upset to hear the stories of abandoned animals. I have written about my dog Chester in this blog, world's goofiest dog. Remember my husband's glasses? Still, he made a mistake, just like kids, spouses, partners, friends and family. You don't abandoned them.

I refuse to believe that taking the day off yesterday, is the reason for all my frustration today. I enjoyed my day off yesterday, the rain, conversations with my husband and the quite moments the day offered. It was nice and I needed it. Today, however tells a different story. I am having a low vision day and because of it, I ran into the wall a few times, the stationary bike a few times and I tripped over Chester the dog. These days happen, mostly at inopportune times and it makes coping with everything a little frustrating, because I can't seem to clear up the vision, no matter how often I wash, rub or blink my eyes. This usually happens after I spend a day reading. I had a lot of reading to do for homework, so this eye nuisance is poorly timed right now. My husband tells me, I need to balance the time reading with some time of resting, with my eyes closed. Sounds good, but this master's program has a lot, an awful lot of reading. It will be interesting to see if my eyes hold out, I am less than 9 months from graduation.

When I read this quote, I knew it was the quote for me because this nuisance with my yes can be quite frustrating and painful (trying running into a wall or trip over a dog), but I'm not a quitter and I refuse to quit because of my eyes. There is a phrase, “mind over matter” the joke is, “if you don't mind, it doesn't matter” I try to remember that and keep moving ahead. Wilma Rudolph, the first American woman runner to win three gold medals at a single Olympics said, “Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit.” This is important to me because 10 years ago in my living room, my sister-in-law chided me, in a very rude manner that, “I was nothing but a high school drop-out” and “I would never be anything but a high school drop out.” That hurt. It hurt because she knew the circumstances and reasons why I didn't finish high school. She also knew it wasn't my choice to quit. At that moment in time, I made the decision to get a college degree, I did and I graduated Magna Cum Laude. Now, I'm getting a Master's degree. My only hope is my eyes hold out and go the distance. This one is out of my hands.

There is not doubt that today has been a frustrating one, the bruises on my shoulder show that, but as Dorothea Brande said, “All that is necessary to break the spell of inertia and frustration is to – act as if it were impossible to fail.” Getting this degree has been hard, making the deadlines, getting all the reading assignments completed, doing the research. Ohhhh the research... but Jimmy Dugan (played by Tom Hanks) said it best in the movie, A League Of Their Own, when trying to convince Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) to not quit the team,It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great.” I believe it will be great when it's complete. Looking forward to a better eyesight day tomorrow.

Allow me to apologize for the delay in the blog today. My husband says, “technology fails us when we need it most” and that's what happened this morning, we had a minor equipment malfunction and it took some time to figure it out. It seems that the dog Chester slept under the desk last night and caused a few disconnections, leave it to our goofy rabbit chasing, wind barker Chester...

Today, Daily Mood Quotes blog is 100 days in the making and when I started this blog on May 5, 2011, I never imagined I would have received so many positive and thought provoking responses from so many people around the world. Your input has been both a blessing and an eye opener. I want to say “thank you” to everyone who reads the Daily Mood Quotes blog regularly, I really appreciate it.

Someone asked me, “why do you post quotes?” When I was a little girl, I would often read a quote in a book that would make me think, or turn a bad day into a good day, even give me a reason to smile. It helped me hold onto a better tomorrow or at least believe that there was a better tomorrow. It worked then and it still works for me today. I find quotes very uplifting and thought provoking and sometimes in life a good quote can be very applicable.

I received an e-mail a couple of months ago asking me, “Do you have a favorite quote?' I don't, I have several favorite authors, but no one favorite quote, although Eleanor Roosevelt's quote, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” is a very strong contender. I believe that this is a very powerful concept, because it talks about responsibility and consequence. As individuals, we can only control a very, very small part of all the things that are going on around us in our lives. The one thing we have the greatest control over, is our actions and our reactions. We have the responsibility to guard our personal dignity; no one can do that for us. It isn't about if someone else respects you or not. It is about whether or not you respect yourself. The consequence of not guarding your personal dignity is that you surrender control of the one thing, regardless of circumstance, makes the difference between living the life you can be proud of, or one you may not be so proud of. Guard your dignity well, it is one of your most precious gifts.

Again, I would like to thank all of my readers, from around the world, for their time and input. Today, while waiting for Chester to attend to doggy business, I stood outside to greet the morning. I noticed the sun shining, beautiful blue skies and the cool breeze. Saturday morning is my favorite part of the week, because there is no bustling sounds, no traffic sounds and no sirens, usually. It's quiet except for the birds who begin their day with song. Imagine if we all started our day with song. Unfortunately, my family would go running for the hills, because I do not have a lovely singing voice.

Today's quote reminds me to stop, look and listen to the songs of life around me and to connect them to my dreams. One of my favorite movies is Flashdance. It is about a girl who had a dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer. But, she was afraid to take a chance. The music moved her from a place deep within and she used that to overcome her artificial boundaries and to rise above her everyday life; to fight for and reach toward her dreams. The song from the movie says, Feel the rhythm, Wrap around, Take a hold of my heart, What a feeling, Being's believing...” There's the key; you have to believe in order to achieve your dreams. When you hear the music of the morning, feel the rhythm of life all around, take it into your heart and use it as a foundation to stretch for your dreams. It could be the songs of the birds, the wind in the trees or field (depending on where you live), or a favorite song that moves you. Music and rhythm can help us step out of the daily bustle and reconnect with our dreams.

In the movie Flashdance, Nick (played by Michael Nouri, who now has a recurring role on NCIS) said to Alex (Jennifer Beals), “When you give up your dream, you die.” Maybe not physically, but inside our hearts, maybe a bit. “...you feel like you were meant for something better? Something special...” (thanks Captain Pike from Star Trek). When we surrender our dreams, we lose the fight of our lives. I believe we are all meant to reach for our dreams and be the best version of ourselves. To fulfill our best potential.

This seems to be a missing theme in today's world. To a large degree you need a “can do” attitude. Everything changes so fast and to stay afloat people need to keep changing just as fast. Sometimes that means committing to something before you know how to do it. This may sound contra-productive and out of vogue, but isn't that exactly how we got to the moon? We committed a nation to getting there and then figured out how to do it. John F. Kennedy said, We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.” That was a goal for a nation, to put a man on the moon and bring him home safely. It wasn't easy and it took many to say “yes” or “certainly, I can,” or at least “I don't know, but I will figure it out.”

I can remember a time when people accepted challenges, individually, as a group, a committee, a Nation, but now it seems as if we don't want the responsibility if something fails. So, we shrug our shoulders, point the finger and let someone else take on the challenges. My husband asks, “Where have our balls gone?” Funny thing, our goofy dog Chester heard the word “ball” and brought the play ball (one thing he hasn't managed to destroy) to my husband. Chester said “yes” by bringing the ball and got to play a little bit. But in life, in the job market and in day-to-day living, the balls seem to have left the building, because many just don't take chances anymore. It seems we're afraid to hire the best people... because they may leave? We're afraid to hire an older, experienced, educated person, because they might know a bit more than the boss, really? What's wrong with that picture... you think you would want the best person? There is a difference between a “yes, man” and a “yes, I can man.” Can you tell the difference?

In the movie Yes, Man, an average guy named Carl (played by Jim Carey) made the statement, “The era of "yes" has begun,” and thereby changed his life.

Somebody should tell the body that. This morning I heard sounds, sounds I had never heard before, there was a SNAP, a CRACKLE and a POP! “Oh crap!” I thought, because I had realized it was me. “Welcome to middle age” said my husband. Middle age! The number may be middle age, but the sounds certainly are old age. It took me a while to realize there was also pain involved. It seems it takes a little longer for nerves to wake up and pay attention enough to send the signal to your brain "That hurts". Your awake and you ache. There is no escaping it. It feels like I have been out playing a game of tackle football and all I did was clean the bathtub. I wonder if there is a good way to clean the bathtub standing up?

The point is, even though we may ache and bodies may groan, there is no need for our minds and attitudes to grumble and moan. Yes it is just barely poetic and I know it is not great, but it's how I feel today. George Burns, a very funny comedian, is a great resource of humor for aging. He once said, “You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you're down there.” Maybe that would help in cleaning the bathtub, who knows? My husband said, he could of helped, but then we would both ache together. Hmmm? I question his thought process. Not really, he would have helped, but he was busy at the time (taking a nap). The thing is that with age comes wisdom and a bit of wear and tear. They are two sides of the same coin. The wisdom I am learning today is that even though we all get older, every minute of every day, and sometimes that's a painful revelation, there is no reason for our attitudes to age and decay. In fact, I realized a short time after the noisy start to the day, I was laughing at the idea that I could even make those sounds. It's not that I am especially looking forward to more “musical mornings” But it certainly beats the alternative. I have to go now, Chester is eating something he shouldn't .....again.

No movie quote today, because I couldn't think of a good movie on aging that didn't involve death, I was not interested in that subject.

This morning when I woke up, I had no idea what today's quote or mood would be, but sometimes material presents itself (thanks Ray Romano). As we began our day, my husband began searching for his glasses. They were no where to be found, at least at first. Then a glimmer of reflective light from the floor caught my eyes. Then I realized, "that which we had feared had come to pass." Our big, dumb, goofy dog, Chester had eaten my husband's glasses.

Chester is a mixed breed rescue that was too much for his other family, and we have come to understand why. If it's not pinned down, or too high to reach, it becomes a doggy hor d'oeuvre when no one is around. From tissues to pens, to slippers, and more...Chester has given us good reason for caution. We search the floor every night for small items more thoroughly than a carrier crew walks the flight deck. Last night, my husband made the mistake of setting his glasses down, when he woke up in the middle of night with indigestion (it was taco night). This morning dawn broke and his titanium glasses where mangled beyond recognition. Supposed to last a lifetime, I guess they didn't count on a dog named Chester. The only things that stood the test of Chester's teeth were the polycarbonite lens, scratched, but still intact. The frame however, looked like a doggy chew toy. Is there anything this damn dog won't eat?

John Grogan (played by Owen Wilson) in the movie, Marley and Me said, “A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes (good thing, because Chester would eat them). A water log stick will do just fine (or in our case anything that fits in Chester's mouth and few things that won't). A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor (good thing because Chester is putting us in the poor house), clever or dull (it's a good thing he's pretty, because he's a slow study), smart or dumb (again, could be the dumbest dog on the planet). Give him your heart and he'll give you his (after he eats everything else). How many people can you say that about (none of my friends eat my stuff)? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special (while pissing me off in the process)? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?”(or totally exasperated!)

When it all comes down to it, it's only stuff and it really doesn't compare to Chester's loyalty, or his fierce protection of our family against wind, thunderstorms and rabbits. I'm just happy he hasn't figured out how to remove the lid from the trash can. Well off to the eye doctor.
