Daily Mood Quotes - November 14, 2011

Daily Mood Quote
Day 194 – November 14, 2011

There are people who, instead of listening to what is being said to them, are already listening to what they are going to say themselves.
~Albert Guinon

Most days it seems as if I live right smack in the middle of the land of “people listening to themselves.” I'm sure this is happening everywhere, or maybe I'm just frustrated by what seems to be a rampant lack of listening skills in my particular region. I'm not sure, but what I am certain of is that it's becoming an epidemic. Don't get me wrong, I believe a little bit of self-talk is a fine and healthy thing, but when it gets in the way of hearing and following the simplest of instructions, then there's a problem. It is the worst when people begin speaking those rattling “squirrelly thoughts” right out loud, right in the middle of your sentence. Makes your blood boil and that's only the beginning.

Ernest Hemingway said, “when people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” He was right, most people don't listen. In my undergrad studies, I took a class called Human Behavior. The class was designed to teach listening skills, body language interpretation and understanding of the communication flow. This was my favorite class, because I learned a lot about myself, my listening skills (which were bad at the time), my body language and how I understood my own communication capabilities with others. This was one of the classes that gave me a new direction. Unfortunately, the class (if you did well in it, and I did) had its pitfalls. It makes you so much more aware of how others act, that you see the communication flaws, through their body language, word choice and communication style. To sum it up, it can be very frustrating, because you know when someone you are speaking too, or e-mailing, or talking to on the phone is off on another planet or lying. Perhaps it might have been better to be blissfully unaware...or not.

This morning, my husband just about blew a blood vessel (no joke) while driving the car; he got so worked up over the failure to follow a very simple point, by a client's distribution vendor. Normally he's pretty easy going about mistakes, because he has long ago accepted that even the best intentioned folks can err. In this case though, he had enough. The thing that perplexed him was “why can't people follow simple written instructions? It was right there “in black and white,” with zero ambiguity.” He wondered allowed “what chipmunks are running lose in their heads when they read an e-mail?” I know for a fact that what he had written was clear, concise and unambiguous in any way, as to the nature of what was expected. I know because I proof read it. He even went so far as to outline what problems would happen if the instructions were not followed. Apparently, he could of written it in Sanskrit or ancient hieroglyphics, because it made absolutely no difference when he opened the package on Saturday. It was 100 % wrong and as if they were actually trying to do it wrong. His only question was “Why?” Was it spite, inability to read (that's possible given our current educational system's standards) stupidity, or something more insidious; “teeny-tiny” attention span. Like a gnat! Brought on by our urgent, immediate gratification culture. Since when did “fouled-up” become the new norm, or acceptable at any level?” I'm really glad these people aren't in the airline industry, or we would have wrecks all over the place. What the hell do people think about when they read or hear instructions? Seriously, I could use some input here.

I've used this before and I'll say it again. Paul Simon sang in the song The Boxer, “But, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” No matter how profoundly true it is, it stills comes as a shock when your just trying to do the right thing. That's what gets me; people you talk to don't listen, teachers don't pay attention to anything outside their twenty year old information, but everybody knows what the E-TRADE baby says. Thank goodness for advertising; otherwise nobody would know anything about anything, apparently... “just a man and his cell phone and an E-TRADE app... nobody knows the troubles.....”

What will you listen to today?

Daily Mood Quotes - October 19, 2011

Daily Mood Quotes
Day 169 – October 19, 2011

“For many people, one of the most frustrating aspects of life is not being able to understand other people's behavior.”
~Unknown Author

There is an old adage that goes, “walk a mile in my shoes.” I understand this to mean that you should not judge, or pass judgement on, someone who's situation you know nothing about. It is fascinating to watch how quickly people react to something said, an action or a notion by somebody else. Boy, can the sparks fly, the assumptions arrive in bushels and facts are thrown out the window. And I thought the Fourth of July only came once a year. Wow, was I wrong.

Someone once told me the friends you make become the family you always wanted. I've also heard that “friends are God's way of apologizing for your family.” Too bad you can't pick them from the get go...When I left to go out on my own many years ago, there was always this little voice that nagged at me, causing to me to question myself; “Did I do the right thing by leaving home, moving ahead with my life, wanting more, better.” I wondered if it was right to actually want peace, instead of what Archangel Michael (played by John Travolta) said in the movie Michael, “Battle!” Well, I'm not at battle, I just don't have it in me. I will speak up for what is right, through communication, but yelling, screaming, not listening, throwing things....no way, that's not for me. Neither is trying to roar so loud, that the truth cannot be heard. Then there is lying, or we can creatively refer to as, “convenient memory.” Paul Simon sang in the song The Boxer, “Though my story's seldom told, I have squandered my resistance, For a pocketful of mumbles, Such are promises, All lies and jest, Still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.”

We so often hear what we want to hear. Even if its what we heard long ago. We all can, in times of duress and sorrow, gravitate towards and hold onto “versions” of what was and what happened; that which will make the story plausible and fits our current version of reality. Unfortunately, even plausible stories can unravel and there is only one real “version” when the truth is told. Funny thing about the truth; its never very welcome when people have, or had agendas. The truth, well it doesn't require versions and it won't sit for a picture in our mind. The truth cares not for sentiment, aspiration, cash needs, or convenience. The truth simply is.

I have always taught my children to tell the truth, because when you tell the truth, you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be ashamed of, and you never have to remember what you said. It makes living life a lot easier. Life is already hard to deal with. Why do people find it necessary to make it harder, than it has to be? The truth can be ugly on the outside, but its true beauty lies within the fact that it can and will set you free of self-doubt and fear when confronted by convenient memories. Did I do the right thing when I left home? Yes and those questions I asked myself...disappeared a long time ago.

What truth will you face today?

Daily Mood Quote - August 24, 2011

Daily Mood Quote
Day 113 – August 24, 2011

“Throw back the shoulders, let the heart sing, let the eyes flash, let the mind be lifted up, look upward and say to yourself...Nothing is impossible!”
~Norman Vincent Peale

Everyday is a new opportunity to make the impossible possible, to make a dream come true, to be a part of something you only ever dreamed about. Take a chance, soar, believe you can and achieve the impossible.

Norman Vincent Peale also said, “Become a possibilitarian. No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities – always see them, for they're always there.” All we need to do is look. I have been writing ever since I was a little girl. I kept a diary and my first journal entry was around the age of nine and it was about my mom and how I wished she could love me. She had her problems and apparently I was one of them. But that's all right, because she did manage to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. I suppose that's all she was able to do, at least where I was concerned. She never “saw” the possibilities only the problems and realities of “the here and now” and even those in the worst possible light. I'm not sure how or why and perhaps that is best left unexplored. But it did impact the possibilities that we all saw. It's amazing how much impact a parent's mindset has on children and how long that effect can last.

Anyway... those days are past, but some of the echos remain. I love to write, but find myself at a point of ambivalence. I want to write and I love it, but those darned “possibilities” give me pause. I see them but I must admit to being shocked, because I'm just not use to looking for them in daily life. So, when they begin to “bloom” right in front of me, I am caught off guard. Paul Simon sang, “When something goes right, Well its likely to loose me, Its apt to confuse me. Its such an unusual sight.” Its just a matter of how one looks at life and the situation they are in. I wasn't working when I started this blog, but it gave me time to start writing again. I needed to begin to rekindle my life’s ambition. Since then, life has tried to dampen that kindling, but the internal fire is restarted and I wont let it fade out again.

So here's what I have learned about problems, opportunities and possibilities: We all have problems and “possibilities.” Our possibilities depend on how we view things. Even if we have put them on hold, for whatever reason, we have only to begin, in order to rekindle their potential. And, only when we explore and develop those possibilities can we feel our lives well lived. Even if it scares us silly. By action we build confidence, in confidence we form a foundation and on that foundation success is built. At least I hope. Michael Jordan said, “I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.”

In the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, Christopher Gardner (played by Will Smith) said, “You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period.” Michael Jordan did, and so did many others. Nothing is impossible!!!

What "possibilities" will you see today?
