Daily Mood Quote
Day 70 – July 12, 2011
“If you come home as happy as you leave, you have had a good vacation”
~Author Unknown
Everyone needs a break. Unfortunately, in a recession (let's be honest, that's what it is), elaborate vacations for some of us are out of the question, for the time being. Good thing we have friends to visit. When my best friend of 30 years invited us for a weekend, we said yes. It was a blast, we laughed, relaxed and ate good food. Everything was cooked on a grill and it was awesome. I never realized how good food can taste cooked on a grill...by somebody else.
There was no agenda planned for the weekend and that is what made the mini-vacation so great. No sites that “had” to be seen, no family that “had” to be visited. There were “no had to's” at all. The shopping that we did was impromptu and that made it fun for me, because I got to watch my daughter and my best friend enjoy shopping for shoes (I personally hate shopping). But, this time is was different, it wasn't planned or altogether necessary. Just a treat from a friend. It helped to restore hope from the dimming view of how others have been acting lately.
This was the first time in a long time, my husband and I went on a four day weekend, without having to ask our bosses for Friday and Monday off, or being made to feel guilty about it. It was nice to make the decision, without the need for “permission” to take a break. Granted, it was a low-buck run, minimum expenditures. With the exception of blowing out, what turned out to be a very costly tire, it was the best “mini-vacation” our family has had in at least a decade. Thank you to our life-long friends for having us, for sharing your home, your food and your friendship. We had a great time!
In the movie National Lampoon's Vacation, Clark (played by Chevy Chase) said, “Why aren't we flying? Because getting there is half the fun.” For us, it truly was. How else can you experience a flat tire on a major highway at 60 mph going to your destination and a severe thunderstorm with 70 mph winds coming home? You seldom get that kind of excitement flying the friendly skies. My only difficulty this weekend was not being able to go to the bathroom. I seem to have a shyness about that. Small price to pay for an opportunity to take a break and go away for a while. Sorry about my potty mouth. :) I just had to get it out! And now that we are home, I probably will continue to do so all day....
How will you view or plan your next vacation?
