Daily Mood Quote - June 9, 2011

Daily Mood Quote
Day 36 – June 9, 2011

"Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it."
~Bill Cosby

Yesterday afternoon, a friend shared with me that she had been cancer free for a while and now may be battling it again. My heart went out to her. She is a very nice lady with a beautiful smile and a beautiful personality. I hate this disease and wonder if we will ever be able to get to the point where medicine will cure all cancers. Why does it always seem to affect the people we care about the most? I chose this quote today because of the phrase, “laughter is the best medicine.” Well, I don't know if laughter is the best medicine, but it does certainly seem to help make a difficult situation easier to cope with, even if it is only for a few seconds. If we can laugh a little each day, every day, then maybe laughter in combination with medial advances is the best medicine.

There is no way to minimize this situation, its serious. Undoubtedly, life has its serious times. Grief, anger, frustration, disappointment, there all real and we can't escape them. If we try to bury or ignore it, we may find it causes more problems than it solves. But finding a light in each day, by way of laughter, can help us through the dark times. I believe that laughter is one of nature's best coping mechanisms.

In the movie Patch Adams (played by Robin Williams), Patch said, "You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person I'll guarantee you'll win.” Truer words may have never been spoken. Part of that treatment is to bring the light of optimism and perhaps laughter to those who need it most. A shared smile and a little “funny” can help to ease the pain and for a moment lift the load. Laughter is the seed from which optimism grows. And optimism is a win.

What “seeds of optimism” will you plant today?
