Daily Mood Quote
Day 133 – September 13, 2011
Autumn is my favorite season.
~Johnny Kelly
It has been ever since I was a little girl. First, it meant going back to school and that meant getting out of the house and away from my mother. I was all for that. Second, it meant rejuvenation (the cool air) no more hot, humid, icky, yucky sweaty days. Can you tell I am not a big fan of summer? It's not necessarily summer, it's the excessively warm days, where it is to warm to have the energy to do anything outside. I can't understand how people move to Florida to retire, I'm thinking about Alaska, or somewhere in the upper Midwest where the summer season is shorter and winter begins in October, September if your really lucky. This week our weather changes, a good 20 degree drop in temperature, cooler days, cooler nights and a happier me, menopause notwithstanding. Let me tell you, having a hot flash when the temperature is 95 degrees, or above, is pure misery. It's mostly why I'm not a big fan of summer anymore. What do we call this? Oh yeah, just another part of life, getting older, Its easy to be philosophical about it when its not happening to you, but when it is..."Well, that's a horse of a different color!" (thank you Willy Wonka).
Anyway, I'm looking forward the the seasonal change, you can keep that “life change” stuff. The thing I like best is, walking through the autumn leaves and seeing the color and energy that the brisk fall breezes bring to the air. Wandering out into the woods for a day without nasty bugs and tourists, is not quiet, just serene. The breeze rustles the drying leaves and tousles the goldenrods. Squirrels busily gather food for the winter and bluejays seem to be everywhere. Still, you can hear yourself think out in the autumn woods, no wonder Henry David Thoreau liked it so much. Gordon Tootoosis, who played One Stab in Legends of the Fall, noted “Some people hear their own inner voices with great clearness and they live by what they hear. Such people become crazy, or they become legends.” In the autumn we listen for the clear inner voice: To size up the year so far, to plan a course forward for the next and to weigh the balance of our lives. It's a good time to aim for being the legend, not the crazy. If only menopause would leave me alone!
What will you “hear” this autumn?
