Daily Mood Quote - September 8, 2011

Daily Mood Quote
Day 128 – September 8, 2011

Man does not cease to play because he grows old, he grows old because he ceases to play.
~Drew Lachey

I love the change of seasons, especially summer to fall. Rain comes without the severe levels, clouds move in, leaves change and the gentle breeze returns. It's like a breath of fresh air. I love it...Unfortunately, as a grown-up you are expected to go about your day as any other day, be responsible, make your appointments, be the “grown-up.” I wonder how others would react if I just chucked the day and went out to be a kid, just for today. Go for a walk in the woods, in the rain (I'd run, but that might be too much), maybe catch a drop of rain or two, take a nap in the middle of the afternoon, watch T.V., sit outside and listen to the song the rain makes when it falls. Sounds great. Just take the day off and do what I want to do and not what is expected of me... because I am a “grown-up.” Things are expected and responsibilities are calling.

The thing is that when you really get down to it, most of those “responsibilities” turn out to be what somebody else wants and not about your life at all. They have little to do with raising a better family, or being a better person. It seems that being grown up is more about making others, who couldn't care less about you, “happy.” When I was in the advertising business, we lived on deadline after deadline. Funny word deadline, it's suppose to mean if you don’t get something done then....... Problem is that almost always the “deadlines” were somebody else's way of making their job easier at the expense of others. And after too many sleepless nights trying to make “the deadline”...there was always an extension to the next deadline. Very rarely was it worth the effort and nobody was ever grateful; EVER! Sometimes, being “grown up” just sucks. But today is too nice of a day to dwell on that. Maybe not in the conventional sense of “sunny go to the beach” nice, but here comes Autumn and the air is “refreshed” nice. There just aren't too many of these kind of “nice” and refreshing days in a year. Remember “rule #32: Enjoy the little things” (Thank you Zombieland).

I think one of the secrets to enjoying the little things was said best by Mae West, “You're never too old to become younger.” Enjoying the little things should be something we do everyday, not something that becomes a plan and then a schedule, then a budget line-item, before you even begin to think about sorta-maybe enjoying it. Too complicated...

Aldous Huxley said, “The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.” In the movie Rookie of the Year, Henry Rowengartner (played by Thomas Ian Nicholas) was filming a Pepsi commercial and obviously getting sick of it. The director stopped the filming of the commercial to direct Henry to be “more...sexy.” Henry wanted one thing, to go out and play and asked (I'm paraphrasing here) “Can I go and play now?” How many of us had that thought in the middle of a work day? Like Bruno Mars sings in The Lazy Song, “Today, I don't feel like doing anything” well not anything,  I will enjoy the day, but, I'll do it "my way" (thanks Frank Sinatra).

Will you find your “inner child” today?

Tune in tomorrow to read the daily mood quote
