Daily Mood Quote
Day 125 – September 5, 2011
Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.
~Thomas Merton
Recent conversations have me saying, “Wow!” where is the balance in your life? There was a time, a long time ago, where I was absolutely insane about doing everything, everyday: The laundry, the cleaning, the cooking, the errands...the list is long. But, I realized that trying to keep up the Jones' only meant maintaining that insane lifestyle. Plus, I was missing out on fun, relaxation, and the simple pleasures of life. Like Tallahassee, (played by Woody Harrelson) in the movie Zombieland said, “Enjoy the little things.” That's rule #32, if you ask his sidekick Columbus, (Jesse Eisenberg). Moving on!
Yesterday, we talked about procrastination and not getting behind, but one thing that must be remembered; "life's a dance" (thanks John Michael Montgomery). There is a time for work, a time for relaxation, a time to think and a time to rely on instinct. The trick in life is to be aware of what time it is and balancing your time effectively, to stay in time with the rhythms of your life. It's not always about doing what you want, when you want to do it. Rather it is about balancing your time, so that there is time to do what you want. When a person becomes obsessed with one thing; a clean house, status and image, the perfect “presented” life, it's very similar to only learning one step of the dance, one stanza of a song. No matter how well you do it, it's incomplete and you know it instinctively. There is something missing. The thing that is missing is balance and harmony. You have to learn all the steps in order to fully understand and enjoy the dance.
In the movie The Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi (played by Pat Morita) said to Daniel (Ralph Macchio), “You remember lesson about balance?” “Lesson not just karate only. Lesson for whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better, Understand?” The funny thing about the dance of life is that it's never really over. We have to keep learning new notes, lyrics and steps as we go. It's not enough to keep repeating the same old steps over and over, because the dance floor keeps moving right along with time and we have to adjust. One thing about being human is that we all have the capability to continue to learn and grow along with the dance of life, we just need to be open to it. We are the choreographers of our life and finding the harmony and beauty of life's rhythms is our life's work. And so, lesson about procrastination learned, and now it's time to establish a new balance, learn some “new steps”, add some words to the song and “feel” the harmony. Little secret: Tallahassee was oddly right. “Enjoy the little things.” Something else to keep in mind; what works today may need to be choreographed again tomorrow. The dance goes on.......
What new steps in life's “dance” will you learn today?
Tune in tomorrow to read the daily mood quote
